Energy Minister, Dr. Andrew Wheatley says Jamaica could be producing oil within a few years.
The Energy Minister revealed that preliminary seismic studies byTullow, a leader in independent gas and oil exploration and production have brought positive results.
Tullow, was granted permission last year to conduct an offshore two-dimensional seismic survey to determine Jamaica’s potential for commercial oil and gas.
The Minister says that two-dimensional seismic studies are currently being undertaken, after which, a more detailed three-dimensional study will be conducted, followed by the construction of an exploration well.
Positive results from that well would lead to the construction of several wells, which could see Jamaica producing oil in another three to five years if all goes well according to the energy minister.
