How did you get started in music? What inspires you?
Music has always been a part of my life, at the age of 5 I discovered that I could sing. I was singing one day when a sweet melody came out, I tried so much over and over to sing the same song so I could hear back that melody but I just couldn’t find it. I started signing more and more everyday and kept listening to myself trying to find the melody for years. Within that time period, people around would applaud me and tell me how talented I was and that I should continue singing. The inspiration I got from others and their acknowledgment of my talent pushed me further as I wanted more from music or to find out how good I really was. As such, I started writing everyday and listening more and more to legends such as Dennis Brow, Garnett Silk, Beres Hammond, Jah Cure, James Brown, Sammy Davis, Bob Marley and the great Michael Jackson. I started going to studios at the age of 15 where I would observe and try to imitate what others were doing until I was able to practice, compose and sing better. Being that I stutter a lot whenever I am talking yet signing came so naturally, I decided to sing more in trying to express myself better. Over the years I have developed a passion for music. For me, this was my gift, my way of expressing myself since talking was way more difficult. I would take too long trying to tell you a single sentence so I expressed everything through my music.
Tell us a bit about your new album, “Jah Love Surround Me.”
Jah Love Surround Me original track was released in the year 2009. This was my first ever hit single which started my musical journey and career which to date is still my biggest song yet. This new album was produced way back in 2018, however, for some reason, all the names we tried to come up with for this project to me just did not cut it so I held off on the release. In 2021 during the Pandemic, I decided to remake Jah Love Surround Me. Popcaan and I were in Portland Jamaica and we were both playing songs and having a ’sound clash’. He mentioned that during the clash that he was going to use my own song to win the clash against me and started playing Jah Love Surround Me original track when all the people around us started a loud uproar. At that point, I realized how powerful this song really was and decided to remake it and feature Popcaan and Dre-Island. Again, this Jah Love remix created great strides on the musical scene. With this, added the song to the compilation I already had and decided to use it as the title track and to name the album after my first ever hit single. After over a decade, Jah Love Surround Me reignited and was once again a huge hit. This new album ‘Jah Love Surround Me’ is a 15 track project that delivers spirited, venturesome and soulful melodies wrapped in heartfelt lyrics and dynamic sounds. The album features dancehall and reggae giants such as Popcaan, Dre-Island, Chris Martin, Anthony B, Capleton, Jah Cure and Kumar. The soulful longing of Zamunda’s voice throughout the album is as captivating as it was when Jah Love Sound Me original single was released in 2009.
Describe your musical style and how it is unique.
I stutter a lot whenever I speak or try to speak so at times I withdraw myself from engaging in conversations because of the time I will take to try and express myself. As such, I use my talent to express my feelings and everything that I would want to say. To me, my singing style is very soulful and heartfelt and dynamic. My music helps to soothe the mind, empower and uplift.
